Product, packaging & warehouse master data

The warehouse-specific master data that decides where stock goes, how it is packed and who moves it.

ScopeIn embedded EWM, product and BP come from S/4HANA; warehouse-specific views are maintained in EWM.
01

Warehouse product

The warehouse product extends the S/4HANA material with warehouse-number-specific data: putaway control indicator, stock removal control indicator, process-type determination indicator, storage section indicator, bulk storage and slotting data.

  • Maintained per warehouse number and party entitled to dispose.
  • Indicators drive storage type search sequences in putaway and picking.
  • Mass maintenance is possible with /SCWM/MAT1 lists and migration objects.

Packaging specifications

A packaging specification describes how a product is packed (levels: each → case → pallet), with quantities, packaging materials and work steps. EWM uses them for automatic packing at GR, cartonization, putaway quantity classification and VAS instructions.

  • Determined through a condition technique (pack spec determination).
  • Levels can carry operative units of measure for putaway/picking.
  • Can be distributed from ERP or maintained in EWM.

Handling units & packaging materials

A handling unit (HU) is a physical unit of packaging material plus contents, with a unique SSCC/HU number. EWM handles nested HUs (pallet → cartons), HU types and HU type groups that control which bins can hold which HUs.

  • Packaging material type defines HU behaviour (e.g. pallet, carton, TU).
  • HU type check on storage type/bin type prevents wrong putaway.
  • HUs are tracked through warehouse tasks; HU history supports traceability.

Storage bins: structure, creation & blocking

Bins are generated from a bin structure template (aisle-stack-level-position) or uploaded. Bin types, max weight/volume, verification fields, and fixed bins for picking areas are defined per bin.

  • Create bins with /SCWM/LS10 (generation) or upload with /SCWM/SBUP.
  • Blocks: putaway block, stock removal block, and user-defined blocking reasons.
  • Sort sequences per activity area drive optimal walking paths.

Resources, users & presentation devices

Resources represent workers or equipment (forklifts) executing warehouse orders. Resource types and resource groups control queue access and qualifications; users are assigned to resources and to an RF presentation device.

  • Queues group warehouse orders; resource groups get queue sequences.
  • Execution constraints prevent certain resource types in certain areas.
  • RF logon uses the resource and presentation device to render screens.

Business partners & supply chain units in EWM

Suppliers, customers, carriers and the warehouse itself appear as business partners and are used in deliveries, TUs and routing. The party entitled to dispose (owner of stock decisions) is a BP linked to the plant.

  • Carrier BPs are needed for TU and shipping documentation.
  • Plant as BP is created for the party entitled to dispose.
  • Partner roles in delivery documents feed printing and determination.

Put it into practice

Design master data for a new pick area

A new carton-flow picking area opens for 2,000 fast-moving SKUs. Define the storage type, bin structure, fixed-bin approach, the product indicators that route stock there and the replenishment trigger.

Interview-style questions

What does the putaway control indicator do?

It is assigned in the warehouse product and determines the storage type search sequence used during putaway.

How can you create bins in bulk?

With bin generation from a structure template (/SCWM/LS10) or by upload (/SCWM/SBUP).

Who is the party entitled to dispose?

The business partner (usually the plant BP) that has the right to dispose of the stock.
