Stock types, batches & serial numbers

How EWM represents stock — the quant, stock types, availability groups — and how batches and serials keep it traceable.

ScopeStock types and availability groups map EWM stock to IM stock types in S/4HANA. Get the mapping right before testing anything.
01

Quants & stock attributes

EWM stock is held in quants: product + quantity in a bin or HU, distinguished by attributes such as stock type, batch, owner, party entitled to dispose, stock usage (sales order, project) and goods-receipt date.

  • Quants with identical attributes in the same location are merged.
  • GR date and SLED drive FIFO/FEFO removal strategies.
  • The stock overview in the warehouse monitor shows quants by bin, HU and attributes.

Stock types & availability groups

EWM stock types distinguish not only unrestricted/quality/blocked but also whether stock is in putaway or in the warehouse — for example F1 unrestricted in putaway and F2 unrestricted in warehouse; Q3/Q4 quality inspection; B5/B6 blocked. Availability groups map EWM stock to the S/4HANA storage location.

  • GR posts into the 'putaway' stock type; completing putaway changes it to the 'in warehouse' type.
  • Availability group + plant = storage location in IM (e.g. ROD receiving-on-dock vs AFS available-for-sale).
  • Posting changes between stock types can be done in EWM and update IM automatically.

Batch management in EWM

Batches and their classification are shared with S/4HANA (embedded) or replicated (decentralised). EWM can require the batch at GR, determine batches in outbound based on ERP batch selection criteria, and split HUs by batch.

  • Batch-managed products need batch-relevant settings in both systems.
  • SLED and production date drive FEFO stock removal rules.
  • Batch changes and splits can be done in EWM with posting changes.

Serial numbers

Serial-number requirements are set by the warehouse-number-dependent serial number profile: serials at document level (captured on the delivery), at warehouse-number level (captured at GR/GI) or inventory-relevant (tracked per bin for every movement).

  • Inventory-relevant serials give the strongest traceability and the most RF scanning.
  • Serial numbers can be pre-advised via ASN/DESADV.
  • Align with the S/4HANA serial number profile to avoid GI errors.

Owner, stock usage & special stocks

EWM supports multiple owners (e.g. 3PL scenarios) and special stocks such as sales-order stock, project stock, supplier consignment and customer returns, visible as quant attributes.

  • Owner differs from party entitled to dispose in 3PL and consignment.
  • Special stocks must be considered in stock removal and replenishment.
  • Stock comparison with IM uses /SCWM/ERP_STOCKCHECK.

From the field: Run /SCWM/ERP_STOCKCHECK daily during hypercare — catching an EWM–IM difference on day 2 is far easier than at month-end.
Put it into practice

Why is stock not available for sale?

After GR, a sales order cannot be confirmed although the pallets are physically in the warehouse. Explain the role of stock type F1 vs F2, availability groups and the storage-location mapping, and how to fix it.

Interview-style questions

What is the difference between F1 and F2?

F1 is unrestricted stock in putaway (received but not yet put away); F2 is unrestricted stock in the warehouse.

What links EWM stock to an IM storage location?

The availability group combined with the plant, mapped to the ERP storage location.

Name the three serial number levels in EWM.

Document level, warehouse-number level and inventory-relevant serial numbers.
