WM to EWM migration & EWM projects

Moving from LE-WM to EWM in SAP S/4HANA — options, data, testing and the go-live lessons that matter.

ScopeWritten from WM/EWM project experience. Dates of compatibility-scope rights depend on your SAP contract; confirm with SAP.
01

Why WM customers must decide

Classic LE-WM runs in S/4HANA only under the compatibility scope, which is not the target architecture. Customers move either to EWM (embedded or decentralised) or, for simple storerooms, to Stock Room Management, which keeps WM-like functions with a reduced scope.

  • Check your contract for compatibility-scope usage rights and dates.
  • Simple, non-bin-heavy storerooms may be fine with IM + Stock Room Management.
  • Complex DCs justify EWM process redesign rather than a like-for-like copy.
02

Mapping WM concepts to EWM

Most WM terms have an EWM counterpart, but behaviour differs: WM transfer requirement / transfer order → EWM warehouse request / warehouse task & order; WM movement type (LE) → EWM process type; WM storage unit → EWM handling unit; WM quant → EWM quant with more attributes.

  • EWM adds POSC/LOSC, waves, WOCR and resource management that WM lacks.
  • RF in EWM uses the RF framework instead of LM transactions.
  • Reports and custom programs on WM tables (LQUA, LTAK, LTAP) must be rebuilt.
03

Migration of master data & stock

Typical sequence: warehouse structure → products and packaging specs → bins (/SCWM/SBUP) → fixed bins → stock via initial stock upload (/SCWM/ISU) aligned with IM balances. Decide whether HUs are migrated or re-labelled.

  • Freeze WM movements and run final stock comparison before upload.
  • Reconcile EWM vs IM with /SCWM/ERP_STOCKCHECK after upload.
  • Plan a physical count or spot checks for high-value bins.

Testing an EWM solution

EWM testing is about volume and devices as much as configuration: end-to-end tests by process (inbound, outbound, internal, PI), RF device testing with real scanners and labels, printer tests, interface tests (3PL, carriers, MFS) and a volume/performance test on peak-day data.

  • Test exception flows: pick denial, damaged goods, short receipts, cancellations.
  • Train key users on the warehouse monitor before UAT.
  • Run a 'day in the life' with real shift patterns.
From the field: Label printers and RF Wi-Fi coverage cause more go-live incidents than configuration. Test them in the real building, not the meeting room.
05

Go-live & hypercare

Warehouse go-lives usually happen over a weekend with reduced volume. Hypercare focuses on queue monitoring, stuck deliveries, stock comparisons, RF issues and user coaching on the floor.

  • Daily checks: SMQ1/SMQ2 queues, /SCWM/MON alerts, open GR/GI, stock comparison.
  • Keep a floor 'war room' with key users during the first shifts.
  • Track KPIs: dock-to-stock time, pick rate, order cycle time, inventory accuracy.

Put it into practice

Plan a WM-to-EWM conversion

A plant warehouse with 6,000 bins runs LE-WM in ECC and is converting to S/4HANA. Propose an approach (EWM or Stock Room Management), outline the data migration and list the five biggest risks.

Interview-style questions

What is the EWM equivalent of a WM transfer order?

A warehouse task (bundled into warehouse orders).

Which transaction uploads initial stock into EWM?

/SCWM/ISU (initial stock upload).

What is Stock Room Management?

A simplified, WM-based storeroom solution in S/4HANA for customers with simple warehousing needs.
