Outbound processes, picking & shipping

From delivery to truck: waves, picking strategies, packing, staging, loading and goods issue.

ScopeCovers standard outbound for sales orders and STOs. Production supply is in Advanced topics.
01

Outbound delivery order

The ERP outbound delivery is distributed to EWM as an outbound delivery order (ODO). In older releases an outbound delivery request (ODR) was created first; in current S/4HANA releases the ODO is created directly. At goods issue EWM creates the final outbound delivery.

  • Route, carrier and priority are taken from the ERP delivery.
  • Process type determination selects picking and staging behaviour.
  • Changes after distribution may be blocked depending on status.

Stock removal strategies

Picking searches stock using the stock removal control indicator → storage type search sequence → stock removal rule: FIFO, LIFO, SLED/FEFO, partial quantities first, quantity-dependent or a custom rule.

  • Stock removal search sequence can depend on quantity classifiers (piece vs pallet).
  • Batch selection from ERP restricts the quants found.
  • Pick denial and replenishment interplay when the fixed bin is empty.

Waves, templates & release

Waves group delivery items for joint release — by route, carrier, cut-off time or activity area. Wave templates and wave template determination assign items automatically; release creates the warehouse tasks.

  • Release methods: immediate, automatic at release time, manual.
  • Waves can be released 2-step (pick to staging, then distribute).
  • Monitor and release waves in /SCWM/WAVE or the warehouse monitor.

Warehouse order creation rules

WOCR split and bundle warehouse tasks into executable work packages — limits by weight, volume, number of items, picking path — and assign them to queues. Good WOCR design often matters more for productivity than any RF screen.

  • Sort rules and filters decide which tasks a rule applies to.
  • Pick-HU proposal can be part of the WOCR (pack during picking).
  • Consolidation groups keep tasks for the same destination together.

05

Picking execution & exceptions

Pickers execute warehouse orders on RF devices (or pick-by-voice / pick-by-light integrations). Exceptions such as pick denial, bin change or quantity difference are recorded with exception codes and can trigger follow-up workflows (e.g. PI document, replenishment).

  • Exception codes are defined per process step and can trigger a workflow or block the bin.
  • Pick-HU can be created as a shipping HU directly.
  • Paper-based picking is possible for small sites.

Packing, cartonization & staging

Picked goods go to a pack work centre where HUs are created, labels printed and weights captured. Cartonization planning (advanced) proposes optimal cartons in advance. Staging moves HUs to the staging area/door for loading.

  • Pack station UI: /SCWM/PACK.
  • POSC steps: PICK → PACK → STAG → LOAD.
  • Shipping labels and documents via PPF output.

07

Loading & posting goods issue

HUs are loaded onto a TU or vehicle (simple or complex loading with RF), the TU is checked out, and goods issue is posted — updating the ERP delivery, reducing IM stock (601/641) and triggering billing.

  • GI can be posted per delivery, per TU or automatically at check-out.
  • Shipping & Receiving / Shipping Cockpit and TM integration cover planned transportation.
  • Reversal of GI is possible within limits and requires correction of the ERP delivery.

Put it into practice

Design a same-day shipping wave

An e-commerce DC must ship orders placed before 2 pm the same day. Design the wave templates, release times, WOCR limits and pack-station flow, and say how you would monitor the cut-off.

Interview-style questions

What is a WOCR?

A warehouse order creation rule — it groups warehouse tasks into warehouse orders using limits, sort rules and filters.

Name three stock removal rules.

FIFO, LIFO, SLED/FEFO (also partial quantities first, quantity-dependent).

Which movement type is posted in IM for an SD outbound delivery?

601 (641/643 for stock transport orders).
