Warehouse process types, explained

One four-character key controls how almost every warehouse task in EWM behaves.

What it is

A warehouse process type is the EWM successor to the WM movement type. Every warehouse task carries one, and it controls the activity (putaway, pick, internal move), confirmation behaviour, storage process (POSC), printing, and whether tasks are created immediately or via waves.

How it is determined

For delivery-based tasks EWM determines the process type from the document type, item type, delivery priority, process indicator and the product's process-type determination indicator. Ad-hoc tasks use the process type entered by the user.

Typical examples (SAP sample configuration)

  • 1011 putaway from inbound delivery
  • 2010 picking for outbound delivery
  • 3010 replenishment / internal movement
  • 9999 general warehouse task (ad-hoc)

Copy standard process types into your own namespace before changing them.

Design tips

  • Keep the number of process types small and documented.
  • Use process-type determination indicators for product-specific behaviour instead of new delivery types.
  • Test determination with the delivery's process-type field in /SCWM/PRDI or /SCWM/PRDO.

Takeaway

If a warehouse task behaves strangely, start with its process type. It is the most powerful single control object in EWM.
