An inbound delivery's journey in EWM

From ASN to bin: the steps, the documents and the stock types a pallet passes through.

From PO to warehouse request

The supplier's ASN (or a manually created inbound delivery in S/4HANA) is distributed to EWM because its plant and storage location are mapped to a warehouse number. EWM creates its own inbound delivery and determines the warehouse process type.

At the door

The truck checks in as a transportation unit, is assigned a door and is unloaded. Goods receipt is posted — S/4HANA inventory increases, but in an EWM stock type such as F1 (unrestricted in putaway), mapped to a 'received on dock' availability group.

Through the process steps

Process-oriented storage control decides the sequence: unload → deconsolidate (mixed pallets) → quality inspection (if relevant) → putaway. Layout-oriented storage control adds physical stops such as an identification point before automated storage.

Finding the bin

The product's putaway control indicator selects a storage type search sequence; the storage type's putaway rule (empty bin, addition to stock, fixed bin…) finds the bin. Warehouse tasks are bundled into warehouse orders and executed by RF.

Done means available

When the final putaway task is confirmed, stock changes to F2 and becomes available for sale. That last status change is what sales and MRP actually see.

A concept overview with illustrative examples. Exact steps and available functions depend on your SAP release and configuration.
